Travelogue: An unforgettable trip through Chile
I had the privilege of taking an unforgettable trip through Chile that took me from the bustling streets of Santiago to the vast, untouched expanses of the Atacama Desert – an adventure full of natural wonders, culture and personal discovery. Here is my travelogue:
Santiago de Chile: Exploring the capital
My trip began in the vibrant capital of Santiago de Chile. The city, framed by the majestic Andes, has so much to offer. First, I visited Cerro San Cristóbal, a hill in the heart of Santiago that offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains. I took the cable car (Teleférico Santiago) to the top and enjoyed the view of the vast cityscape. Cerro Santa Lucia, a smaller hill in the center, impressed me with its history and the pretty gardens that run through the citadel.
Another highlight in Santiago was visiting the National Library of Chile, which is a true gem of architecture and culture. The library is impressive not only for its collection, but also for the historic building and the calm atmosphere – a perfect place to relax and reflect.

Trip to the Cajón del Maipo Gorge
After a few days in Santiago, I decided to take a day trip into nature. The Cajón del Maipo, an impressive gorge in the Andes, was the perfect destination. I wrapped up warmly and enjoyed the day amidst the stunning landscape characterized by rugged rocks and clear mountain streams. Particularly impressive was the visit to the El Yeso Dam – a huge reservoir framed by the surrounding peaks. On the way back, I stopped at the Tinoco Tunnel, an old railway tunnel, and took a short hike to discover the history of this region. Another highlight was the charming Casa Chocolate, a café and museum, which rounded off the visit with a cup of hot chocolate.

By night bus to Futrono
From Santiago, I took the night bus to Futrono, a small village in the Los Rios region. Near Lago Ranco, I enjoyed a few quiet moments by the lake before visiting the stunning Mirador Nacimiento Rio Bueno, from where I had a fantastic view of the valley and the surrounding landscape.
In Termas Chihuio, a hot thermal bath in the middle of nature, I was able to relax after a long day. Finally, in Valdivia, I visited the local market, where I discovered fresh, regional products and handicrafts – a real treat for all the senses. The market is right on the water and the sea lions in the water are just waiting to have leftover fish thrown to them by the market vendors.

Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales: Adventure in the South
From Puerto Montt, I flew to Punta Arenas, where I spent a night before taking the bus to Puerto Natales the next morning. The Torres del Paine National Park was waiting for me there, a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers. The huge rocks of the Torres and the imposing glacier landscapes are some of the most impressive natural wonders I have ever seen. I spent a few days hiking the trails and enjoying the breathtaking scenery.
The way to the Atacama DesertAfter my adventure in the south, I traveled on to the Atacama Desert, which immediately captivated me with its surreal beauty. In a permanent tent camp in the desert, I was able to enjoy the undisturbed view of the Milky Way. At night, under the clear starry sky, I felt very small, but also incredibly alive.
With a borrowed mountain bike, I set out to explore the desert. I visited the Pukara de Quitor, a pre-Columbian fortress, and Death Valley, where the rugged rocks and the bizarre landscape seemed like something from another universe. Another unforgettable moment was a party in the desert, where I enjoyed the pulsating music with other travelers over a few drinks.

Horseback riding in the desert | Trip through Chile
A horseback riding through the desert at sunset was also one of my experiences. The slow rhythm of the horse and the endless expanse of the landscape gave me a deep feeling of freedom. As the saying goes – the happiness of the earth lies on the back of the horse. It was indescribably beautiful to discover the desert with your new four-legged friend and see the sun setting on the horizon. A must for horse lovers.
Chile, a country that took my idea of nature and adventure to a new level. I will never forget the memories of Chile, especially the desert and the southern landscapes. It was a trip full of challenges, surprises and magical moments. I will definitely return. That was the end of my trip through Chile and I went straight to the next adventure with a booked tour over to Bolivia. More about that in the next travel blog.
